What Is Appetite?

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between hunger and appetite?

Hunger is a physiological response. Your body signals hunger to let you know it’s time to eat for more fuel and metabolic reasons. On the other hand, appetite is simply the desire to eat.

It is important to know the difference as it can give you a more balanced attitude towards eating and food. Hunger is biology’s way of telling you that you need more fuel to keep up your energy levels.

In contrast, appetite can happen even when hunger is not present. However, it is possible to reduce your appetite and still have satiety.

For example, you may have just eaten a meal but you suddenly see a piece of chocolate cake on TV that makes you to want to eat it even though you are not hungry for it.

Appetite exists in all higher forms of life. Its purpose is to boost your energy levels (think food) in order to regulate all the tasks of metabolic function. Basically, you need food for survival.
